Healthy School Food

Access to healthy, fresh food is central to the well-being of young people. Because children eat many of their meals each week at school, it is imperative that school food be nutritious. CC+S is working with partners across California to understand the current state of school food and identify policies and practices to improve its quality.

Are California Public Schools Scratch-Cooking Ready? A Survey of Food Service Directors on the State of School Kitchens (2020)

This report investigates the scratch-cooking readiness of the state’s public schools’ kitchens by conducting a web-based survey of 200 food service directors in California public school districts. It was conducted in partnership with Conscious Kitchen and the Edible Schoolyard Project.

Planting the Seed: Farm to School Roadmap for Success (2022)

Led by First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross, Planting the Seed: Farm to School Roadmap for Success report draws on CC+S findings on school kitchen infrastructure. CC+S’s Jeff Vincent served on a working group for the roadmap.
